A little more than a year after the 16,828 TEU OOC A little more than a year after the 16,828 TEU OOCL Iris became the largest vessel to ever call the Port of Charleston, her sister vessel the OOCL Lavender made her maiden call to Charleston.

The Lavender joins the South Atlantic Express Service, with Charleston serving as the last port of call for quick exports to Asia.

Today, SC Ports formally retired K9 Lyon from Sout Today, SC Ports formally retired K9 Lyon from South Carolina Ports Police Department, sending him off to endless belly rubs and snuggles with his new family.

This goodest boy was appointed in 2020 as an explosives detection K9, later becoming a member of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Metro Bomb Squad in 2022. During his career, he conducted thousands of searches of over-the-road trucks entering SC Ports’ working terminals, supported large-venue sweeps and dignitary route clearances for Presidents and Vice Presidents of the United States.

Though most of his work was conducted behind the scenes, his impact on public safety and national security was significant. We thank K9 Lyon and his handler, Officer Mara Cadena, for their commitment, dedication and exemplary service.

Charleston area residents who travel I-526E may re Charleston area residents who travel I-526E may remember seeing the Christmas star that used to hang on one of the buildings at the former WestRock Paper Mill. When SC Ports acquired the property, members of our Maintenance Technical Support and Heavy Lift Maintenance groups wanted to be sure this unofficial area landmark still had a home during the holiday season.

Last week the team restored it and placed it on top of one of the ship-to-shore cranes at Wando Welch Terminal, where it can now be spotted it in the distance from the James B. Edwards (Wando River) Bridge.

Post-Covid, the Port of Charleston’s volume has increased by 9% in this trade lane. SC Ports celebrates the successful completion of a SC Ports celebrates the successful completion of a full restoration and stabilization of the historic Bennett Rice Mill façade, marking the most thorough rehabilitation of the historical structure since SC Ports assumed ownership in 1958. The $1.6 million restoration took a year to complete.

“The Rice Mill Façade is a significant piece of Charleston’s architectural history, and the full restoration ensures it will become a beacon for the future redevelopment of this incredible waterfront property. The South Carolina Port Authority’s Board of Direc The South Carolina Port Authority’s Board of Directors announced Micah Mallace as the agency’s next President and CEO. The vote was unanimous.

When a large soybean processing facility in South When a large soybean processing facility in South Carolina suddenly closed last spring, erasing demand for millions of bushels of soybeans from area farmers, SC Ports partnered with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) and private stakeholders to quickly develop export outlets around the world.

As a result of this collaboration, South Carolina farmers were able to quickly work through the surplus, exporting more than three million bushels of soybeans through the Port of Charleston between May and August.
